30 Minutes That Felt Like 6: VR in Seaside, Oregon

A Seaside hotel manager booked with his family. Thirty minutes felt like six, so he brought his staff back the next week.

The headsets came off. The session had run a full thirty minutes.

To the two people who had just played it, it felt like six.

That's the line we hear most often at Seaside VR, usually as some version of “Is it already over?” This time it came from a man whose job is knowing how a visitor should spend an afternoon in town.

Who was playing

He's the general manager of one of Seaside’s major hotels. Every day his front desk gets the same question: what should we do while we’re here? He knows the Prom, the aquarium, the beach in every kind of weather, and which restaurant is worth the walk.

On this visit he wasn't working. He came in with a family member, put on a headset, and played the way any other guest would.

Why the clock drops out

Why does time disappear in VR? Outside a headset, part of your attention stays on the room. A phone lights up. A clock sits on the wall. You notice the door, the street, the fact that you’re standing in a building on Highway 101. Those small checks are how the minutes get counted.

In the game, that room is gone. Every direction you look is the world you’re in. Your hands are in it. The person you came with is beside you, not on a separate screen. Nothing reaches in to remind you that time is passing, so you stop keeping score.

That’s why thirty minutes can feel like six, and why the question afterward is almost never whether it was long enough. It’s how long they were actually in there.

He said it to his own staff

The story could have ended there. It didn’t.

Last Friday we stopped by his hotel. He walked us through the building and introduced us to his staff. As he did, he told them it was the most fun thing he’d done in Seaside, and that they ought to go try it themselves.

He wasn’t saying it for our benefit. He was saying it to the people who answer “what should we do?” every day. From someone who knows every corner of this town, that’s the kind of review you can’t buy.
